Islamabad International Airport Biometric E-Gates Project

The Islamabad International Airport Biometric E-Gates Project is a groundbreaking initiative undertaken by the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) to modernize airport infrastructure, enhance security, and streamline passenger immigration processes. In collaboration with Germany’s M2P Consulting, the project is designed to introduce biometrically enabled e-gates that will automate and fast-track the immigration process, reducing passenger wait times and improving overall airport efficiency.

Key objectives of the project include aligning with international standards (ICAO), reducing manual processing, and providing a seamless travel experience. This initiative is part of a phased rollout across Pakistan’s three major airports: Islamabad International Airport, Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, and Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore. As of June 2025, the design phase has been completed, and the project is transitioning into technical specifications and procurement phases.

Key Details of the Islamabad E-Gates Project:

Purpose :

To modernize the immigration process at airports by incorporating biometrics, reducing wait times, enhancing security, and aligning with international standards.

Location/Scope:

Initially deployed at Islamabad International Airport, with further expansion planned for Karachi and Lahore airports.

Progress:

The design phase, completed by June 2025, has moved to procurement and contractor selection, with deployment set to begin soon.

Implementation Partner:

M2P Consulting alongside Cosmic Engineering, responsible for overseeing technical aspects, contractor selection, and ensuring successful deployment of the e-gates.

Features:

The e-gates will utilize biometric data, particularly for e-passport holders, enabling a faster, automated, and self-service immigration process.

This project is part of Pakistan’s broader push to integrate AI-driven solutions and “smart” technologies across its airports, improving passenger experiences, enhancing security measures, and making the airport infrastructure more efficient and aligned with global standards. The introduction of these e-gates will be a significant step towards modernizing Pakistan’s airport experience for both domestic and international travelers, especially overseas Pakistanis.
